Executive alignment

Agreement at leadership level on priorities, authority, and escalation during a security event.

Executive alignment is agreement among senior leaders on who decides what, which risks matter most, and how to escalate during a security event. In cyber security, it means the CISO, IT, legal, communications, and business executives share the same priorities before an incident starts, rather than debating them while systems are failing.

This matters because attackers exploit confusion as much as technical weakness. When leadership is aligned, teams can approve containment, outage tolerance, ransom policy, customer notification, and recovery steps quickly. Without that alignment, responders may delay action while waiting for authority or conflicting instructions. In practice, strong executive alignment shows up in incident response plans, crisis exercises, and clear escalation paths; weak alignment appears as slow decisions, mixed messages, and fragmented response during ransomware, data theft, or service disruption.
