Evil twin extension

a fake add-on designed to imitate a legitimate developer tool.

An evil twin extension is a fake add-on that imitates a legitimate developer tool, often by copying its name, branding, or function closely enough to trick users into installing it. In software marketplaces, these lookalikes rely on trust and speed: a developer searches for a familiar tool, sees a convincing listing, and grants permissions before verifying provenance.

In cyber security, evil twin extensions matter because they can turn a trusted workflow into a reconnaissance channel. Once installed, they may collect telemetry such as operating system details, workspace names, installed tools, or network information, then send that data to an attacker. Defenders should review publisher identity, check package history, restrict extension permissions, and monitor developer machines for unusual outbound traffic. In practice, the threat is often not immediate disruption but quiet observation that supports later phishing, credential theft, or follow-on intrusion.
