Espionage malware

Software built to quietly collect information over time rather than cause immediate disruption.

Espionage malware is software designed to secretly collect intelligence over time. Instead of destroying files or demanding ransom, it focuses on stealth, persistence, and careful data theft. Common goals include stealing emails, documents, credentials, screenshots, keystrokes, or network details while avoiding attention.

This matters because the damage is often invisible at first: an attacker may stay inside a network long enough to map systems and extract sensitive information from government, diplomatic, or defense targets. In real attacks, espionage malware often appears as a backdoor, trojan, or loader that communicates quietly with a control server, uses limited behavior to evade detection, and blends in with normal activity. Defenders look for unusual logins, hidden persistence mechanisms, suspicious outbound traffic, and behavioral patterns rather than relying only on known file hashes.
