Espionage group

A threat actor focused on stealthy intelligence gathering rather than quick disruption.

An espionage group is a threat actor that focuses on covert intelligence collection rather than loud, short-lived disruption. These groups usually seek access to emails, documents, credentials, internal chat, or other sensitive data that can support long-term monitoring and strategic advantage. They often avoid obvious sabotage because staying hidden is more valuable than causing immediate damage.

In cyber security, the term matters because espionage activity tends to blend into normal network traffic and user behavior. Attackers may use trusted software, living-off-the-land tools, or backdoors that persist quietly after initial access. Defenders look for subtle signs such as unusual authentication patterns, hidden persistence, and data staging or exfiltration. Compared with criminal ransomware crews, espionage groups are often more patient, better resourced, and harder to detect, which makes patching, endpoint monitoring, and least-privilege access especially important.
