Energy attribute certificate

A tradable record that links electricity consumption to specific generation attributes.

An energy attribute certificate (EAC) is a tradable record that separates the environmental attributes of electricity from the physical power itself. It can show, for example, that a megawatt-hour of consumed electricity is associated with renewable generation, even when electrons on the grid are mixed.

In cyber security terms, EACs are a data-integrity problem. The certificate has to be issued, transferred, and retired without duplication, forgery, or stale records. Weak controls around identity, access, logging, and system integration can create invalid claims or double counting. Defenders therefore focus on provenance, audit trails, reconciliation, and secure recordkeeping so that reporting systems can prove exactly which attributes were owned and retired, and when. In markets and disclosure programs, that traceability is what makes the certificate credible.
