Endpoint remediation

The steps used to remove malware and restore a device to a safe state.

Endpoint remediation is the process of removing malicious software from a device and returning it to a trusted, usable state. It usually includes isolating the host, scanning for malware, deleting persistence mechanisms, repairing damaged settings, applying patches, and resetting exposed credentials.

It matters because a compromised endpoint can keep spreading threats even after command-and-control infrastructure is blocked. In real incidents, defenders use remediation to clean infected laptops, servers, and workstations after botnet disruption, phishing, or ransomware activity. Good remediation also verifies that the device is truly safe: if malware changed startup tasks, installed backdoors, or stole credentials, the system may need deeper investigation before it can reconnect to the network.
