Encoding

The technical process that makes a language digitally usable by representing its script and structure for computers.

Encoding is the technical process of representing text, symbols, and structure in a format computers can store, transmit, and process. For languages, this usually means mapping scripts into standards such as Unicode so characters are readable across software, databases, and AI pipelines. Without correct encoding, a language may display as corrupted text, lose punctuation or word boundaries, or become impossible to search, label, or train on accurately.

In cyber security, encoding matters because bad or inconsistent text handling can break validation, hide malicious content, or strip important metadata and access rules from sensitive data. Attackers may exploit encoding mismatches to evade filters or confuse parsers, while defenders use strict encoding checks, normalization, and input validation to preserve integrity. In cultural preservation systems, proper encoding is a baseline control: it lets communities digitize their language while keeping the text stable enough for auditing, access control, and responsible reuse.
