Embedded development

building software for dedicated devices with specific hardware constraints.

Embedded development is the process of building software for dedicated devices such as routers, sensors, printers, audio processors, and industrial controllers. Unlike general-purpose software, embedded code must fit tight limits on CPU speed, memory, power use, storage, and hardware interfaces. Developers often work close to the metal, writing firmware that controls peripherals, timing, and low-level input and output.

In cybersecurity, embedded development matters because these devices are widely deployed and often hard to patch once shipped. Bugs in firmware, boot code, or device drivers can create persistent vulnerabilities that attackers exploit for remote access, device takeover, or supply-chain compromise. Defenders use secure boot, code signing, strict update pipelines, and testing tools such as emulators and hardware-in-the-loop setups to validate behavior before flashing real devices. Good embedded tooling helps teams debug safely, reproduce failures, and harden code against attacks while staying faithful to the hardware constraints that define the platform.
