Electromechanical Infrastructure

The physical support systems in a data center, including power, cooling and related hardware.

Electromechanical infrastructure is the physical backbone of a data center: the power, cooling, backup, distribution, and control hardware that keeps servers running. It includes components such as UPS units, generators, switchgear, power distribution paths, chillers, pumps, fans, and other support systems that are not part of the compute stack itself.

In cyber security, this layer matters because attackers do not always need to touch the application to cause damage. If building management systems, power controls, or cooling automation are exposed or misconfigured, an intruder can disrupt availability, trigger overheating, or force shutdowns. Defenders also depend on this infrastructure during secure decommissioning, because retired power and cooling gear may still contain firmware, settings, logs, or management access paths. Good asset tracking, segmentation, and verified wipe or reset procedures help reduce both outage risk and data exposure.
