Election infrastructure

the digital systems that support election administration and related operations.

Election infrastructure is the collection of digital systems used to run elections and related administration. It can include voter registration databases, election management software, ballot definition tools, result transmission systems, election websites, communications platforms, and the supporting networks and devices that keep them operating.

It matters because these systems protect three core goals: availability, integrity, and public trust. Attackers may try to disrupt services, alter records, steal sensitive data, or create doubt about whether results are reliable. Defenders therefore focus on segmentation, strong authentication, logging, backups, access reviews, and tested incident response. In practice, even a claim of compromise can force rapid verification, because a false or unproven allegation can still cause confusion and pressure election staff. Good security for election infrastructure is not only about preventing intrusion, but also about proving that critical systems remain trustworthy under scrutiny.
