EIOPA is the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, the EU body that supervises insurance and pensions policy and publishes sector guidance. It is not a technical security vendor, but its rules and recommendations shape how insurers handle data protection, operational resilience, outsourcing, and AI governance.
In cyber security, EIOPA matters because insurance firms often process sensitive personal and financial data and rely on complex third-party systems. Its guidance pushes firms to maintain inventories, risk assessments, controls, and evidence for systems that can affect customer outcomes. In practice, defenders use EIOPA-aligned governance to reduce weaknesses such as poor vendor oversight, weak change management, and undocumented model decisions. Attackers benefit when those controls are missing: misconfigured platforms, unmanaged suppliers, and unreviewed AI workflows can create paths to fraud, data exposure, or service disruption. For insurers, EIOPA therefore serves as a sector-specific reference point for security and resilience, alongside broader EU regulation.
