Effort is a reasoning setting that controls how much computational work a model applies to a task. Lower effort usually favors speed and lower token use, while higher effort can produce more careful, thorough answers by letting the model reason longer before responding.
In cyber security, effort matters because analysis quality and cost are linked. A higher-effort setting can help with defensive tasks such as log review, code inspection, threat triage, and policy reasoning, where missing a detail can create risk. But it can also increase latency and token consumption, which affects budgets and automation at scale. Attackers may try to exploit low-effort settings to push a model into shallow or unsafe outputs, while defenders may raise effort for sensitive workflows or require human review when the task has security impact.
