In cyber security, an ecosystem is the connected network of vendors, users, developers, researchers, cloud providers, institutions, and regulators that shapes how technology is built, deployed, and defended. Security is rarely determined by one product or one team alone; it depends on how these parts interact, share data, and respond to risk.
This matters because attackers often target the weakest point in the ecosystem rather than the final target. A compromised software supplier, third-party library, identity provider, or managed service can let an attacker reach many downstream organizations. Defenders also rely on the ecosystem: patch coordination, threat-intelligence sharing, vulnerability disclosure, incident response, and standards such as software bills of materials all help reduce exposure. A strong ecosystem makes attacks harder to scale and makes recovery faster when incidents occur.
