Echo chamber

a feedback loop where people mostly encounter views similar to their own.

An echo chamber is a feedback loop in which people repeatedly encounter views similar to their own. In cyber security, the term matters because platform ranking and recommendation systems can quietly shape what users see, influencing trust, perception, and decision-making. When automated feeds favor familiar content, false claims, phishing lures, or extremist narratives can appear more credible simply because they are repeated and reinforced.

Attackers can exploit echo chambers by seeding communities with coordinated posts, fake engagement, or persona accounts that repeat the same message until it seems widely accepted. Defenders look for coordinated amplification, repetitive content, and unnatural sharing patterns in social networks, influence operations, and fraud campaigns. Reducing the risk means diversifying information sources, adding friction before sharing, and auditing the logic that controls visibility.
