Dynamic range

The span between the weakest and strongest signals a system can handle reliably.

Dynamic range is the span between the weakest and strongest signals a system can handle reliably. In a radio receiver, it describes how much quiet wanted signal and how much unwanted power the front end can tolerate before performance degrades. A system with poor dynamic range may miss weak signals, distort strong ones, or become desensitized by nearby transmitters.

In cyber security, dynamic range matters wherever attackers can influence physical signal paths, especially in RF, wireless, and sensor systems. A malicious high-power emitter, or even an accidental one, can overload receivers, interfere with monitoring, or create openings for denial-of-service against communications. Defenders improve dynamic range with filtering, shielding, gain control, and careful front-end design so the system can keep operating when the electromagnetic environment is hostile.
