A downstream system is any connected service, application, database, or tool that receives data, requests, or trust from another system. If the upstream source is compromised, the downstream component may be exposed through inherited permissions, bad input, stolen tokens, or automated integrations.
This matters because attackers often target the weakest link in a chain rather than the final asset. A breach of one account can affect email, cloud storage, ticketing tools, or identity providers that depend on it. Defenders watch downstream systems for unusual logins, API calls, privilege changes, and data sync errors after an upstream event. Mapping these dependencies helps incident responders contain spread, revoke access in the right place, and estimate what else may have been reached.
