Domain Expert

A person who understands the edge cases, policy details, and process context behind a business function.

A domain expert is a person who understands the real-world rules, edge cases, policy details, and process context behind a business function. In security and enterprise systems, this knowledge is often more important than general technical skill because it tells you how a workflow is supposed to behave, where exceptions are allowed, and which outputs are dangerous even if they look correct.

Domain experts matter in cyber security because attackers often exploit gaps between documented policy and actual practice. A model, script, or analyst can miss subtle approval rules, compensation logic, or access exceptions unless a domain expert helps define them. Defenders use domain experts to build accurate detection logic, validate automated decisions, review access controls, and prevent unsafe assumptions from reaching production. In AI systems, they help turn business logic into governed rules, decision tables, or workflows so the system does not guess when precision is required.
