Documentary proof is the set of records that show how a system was controlled, supervised, approved, or reviewed. In cyber security and compliance, this can include logs, change tickets, access approvals, audit trails, sign-off records, retention policies, and incident reports. The value of these records is not just administrative: they provide evidence that security controls existed and were actually used.
It matters because many attacks leave a dispute behind them. After a phishing-driven payment, a deepfake instruction, or an automated decision gone wrong, organizations may need to prove who authorized an action, whether a human reviewed it, and whether the system followed policy. Defenders use documentary proof to reconstruct events, validate monitoring, and demonstrate due diligence. Without it, a company may have controls in practice but no reliable way to show them later.
