Document segregation

separating sensitive files through access controls and need-to-know limits.

Document segregation is the practice of separating sensitive files so only the right people can reach them. It uses access controls, folder permissions, role-based access, and need-to-know limits to keep personal records, financial data, drawings, and internal communications from sitting in one broadly shared location.

It matters because ransomware crews and insider threats often exploit overexposed document stores. If a shared drive, mailbox, or project repository contains multiple classes of data, one stolen account or one leaked archive can create privacy, legal, and operational damage at the same time. Good segregation reduces that blast radius and supports incident containment, data-loss prevention, and audit checks. In practice, defenders apply it by splitting repositories by sensitivity, restricting export rights, encrypting high-value files, and reviewing who can view or download each document set.
