Document Database

A database that stores information as structured documents rather than rows and columns.

A document database stores information as structured documents, usually in formats such as JSON or BSON, instead of fixed rows and columns. Each record can hold nested fields, arrays, and different shapes of data, which makes it flexible for modern applications and rapid schema changes.

In cyber security, that flexibility changes the trust boundary. Applications often grant service accounts write access so they can create or update documents, and a flaw in the database engine or query handling can turn that legitimate access into data corruption, unauthorized modification, or service disruption. Attackers may abuse write privileges to alter records, inject malicious content, or overload server logic. Defenders reduce risk by applying patches quickly, limiting account permissions, reviewing audit logs, and validating which users truly need write access. In practice, document databases are secured by combining least privilege with careful monitoring of read and write paths.
