DLC

downloadable content added after the original release.

DLC means downloadable content: extra material delivered after the original software release. In games, it can add maps, missions, skins, or expansions; in security terms, it is simply another software package that must be delivered, verified, and installed safely.

DLC matters in cyber security because every post-release package creates an additional trust boundary. Attackers may try to imitate a legitimate DLC download, compromise a distribution account, or replace an update with a trojanized file. Defenders reduce that risk with code signing, checksum verification, authenticated storefronts, least-privilege access to publishing systems, and strict entitlement checks so only authorized users receive paid content. When a studio ships DLC alongside a free update, security teams also watch for version mismatches and compatibility issues that could break mods, plugins, or automated patching pipelines.
