Disclosure delay

the gap between an incident and public notification, which can slow response.

Disclosure delay is the time gap between a security incident and the moment it is publicly reported. It can happen because an organization is still investigating, confirming the scope of impact, or coordinating legal and regulatory notifications. In practice, the delay matters because users, customers, and responders may not know their data or systems are at risk until well after the compromise occurred.

In cyber security, delayed disclosure can slow containment and reduce the time available for defensive actions such as credential resets, account monitoring, endpoint hunting, and fraud detection. Attackers may exploit this window by moving stolen data, selling access, or using exposed information before victims are warned. Good logging, clear incident response procedures, and a tested notification plan help shorten the delay once facts are verified, improving both forensic analysis and user protection.
