Diagnostic tools

Hardware or software used to inspect faults and verify system behavior.

Diagnostic tools are hardware or software used to inspect faults, read status data, and verify how a system is behaving. In security work, this includes vendor consoles, firmware utilities, protocol analyzers, logs viewers, and service interfaces that help operators determine whether a device or application is healthy, misconfigured, or compromised.

They matter because you cannot defend what you cannot inspect. Good diagnostics shorten incident response, support forensic analysis, and help verify fixes after patching or configuration changes. The same tools can also be abused: attackers may use legitimate diagnostics to enumerate systems, gather configuration details, or test whether a compromised device is still under monitoring. For that reason, organizations should protect diagnostic access, keep tooling authenticated and logged, and maintain trusted replacements when original utilities disappear or become unsupported.
