Device wipe

a function that erases local data from a phone or laptop.

A device wipe is a function that erases data stored locally on a phone, laptop, or other endpoint. It may be manual, triggered remotely, or set to happen automatically after failed logins or a security event. The goal is to remove sensitive information from the device itself, including messages, credentials, photos, and cached app data.

In cyber security, device wipe matters because it is a strong defense against theft, loss, and unauthorized access. It is commonly used with mobile device management, anti-theft tools, and incident response plans. In attacks, criminals may try to wipe evidence after compromise, while defenders may use wipes to contain a breach or retire an exposed device. The tradeoff is recovery: once local data is erased, it may be difficult or impossible to restore, so organizations need clear policies for backups, logging, and authorization before using it.
