Device-targeting data

Servicing data used to decide which systems receive an update or rollout first.

Device-targeting data is servicing data used to decide which systems receive an update, policy change, or feature rollout first. It can include signals such as device model, hardware capabilities, OS build, management state, and prior update success, helping vendors narrow delivery to the systems most likely to accept a change safely.

In cyber security, this matters because risky updates are often deployed in stages. A staged rollout can reduce the impact of a bad driver, firmware issue, or trust-chain change by limiting exposure before broad release. Defenders also rely on targeting data to prioritize critical patches for vulnerable endpoints and to confirm whether a security fix has reached the whole fleet. Attackers may try to abuse similar targeting logic by identifying which devices are outdated, misconfigured, or excluded from management so they can focus on the easiest victims.
