Device salvage

Reusing working parts from damaged hardware to restore partial or full function.

Device salvage is the practice of reusing working parts from damaged, retired, or partially failed hardware to restore partial or full function. In cybersecurity, it matters because reused components can carry hidden risk: leftover data, untrusted firmware, tampered storage, or subtle hardware faults may survive the repair process. Salvage is common in labs, field repairs, and low-budget environments where replacing every part is not practical.

In real attacks, salvaged equipment can be abused if attackers recover usable drives, memory modules, radios, or controllers from discarded systems. In defense, the same technique helps incident responders and maintenance teams rebuild systems after damage, but only after inspection, testing, secure wiping, and verification of provenance. Good device salvage is therefore not just repair work; it is controlled reuse with attention to trust, integrity, and data exposure.
