Device customization

changing the look or form of a device for personal or practical reasons.

Device customization is the process of changing the look, shape, labeling, or other physical characteristics of a device for personal or practical reasons. In cyber security, this can include cases where a security token, phone, or other hardware is made easier to recognize, carry, or use. Customization may be cosmetic, but it still affects how people interact with the device.

That matters because attackers often rely on confusion, shared devices, or poor handling of trusted hardware. If a security device is customized so it looks like an ordinary accessory, users may be more willing to lend it, misplace it, or forget its protective role. Defenders also use customization carefully to improve usability, reduce mistakes, and make authorized hardware easier to identify. Good customization should support function, not hide it.
