Development server exposure is a misconfiguration where a tool meant for local use becomes reachable from outside the trusted network. Examples include frontend dev servers, hot-reload services, and build tools that were never intended to face the internet.
It matters because these servers often assume a safe local environment and may reveal source files, environment variables, configuration, or filesystem paths. Attackers scan for exposed dev endpoints because they are easy to automate against and may provide direct access to secrets or infrastructure details. Defenders reduce the risk by binding services to localhost, restricting network access, isolating sensitive files, and treating every development endpoint as part of the attack surface.
