Developer targeting

Social engineering or intrusion tactics focused on engineers and build environments.

Developer targeting is a social engineering or intrusion strategy aimed at engineers, administrators, and the systems they use to build and ship software. Instead of attacking a random employee, the attacker focuses on people with access to source code, build servers, CI/CD pipelines, package registries, cloud credentials, or internal documentation. Because those environments are trusted, a successful compromise can provide leverage far beyond a single workstation.

This matters in cyber security because developers often sit inside a sensitive trust chain. An attacker may steal credentials, plant a malicious update, abuse chat or ticketing workflows, or compromise a build environment to insert backdoors into software artifacts. Defenders reduce the risk by hardening developer endpoints, enforcing phishing-resistant MFA, segmenting build systems, reviewing code-signing and release processes, and monitoring for unusual repository, artifact, or deployment activity. In practice, developer targeting is dangerous because it turns ordinary engineering access into a path toward broader network compromise.
