Desktop hypervisor

Software that runs virtual machines on a personal computer or workstation.

A desktop hypervisor is software that lets a personal computer or workstation run one or more virtual machines. It creates the layer that allocates CPU, memory, storage, and device access while trying to keep each guest operating system isolated from the host and from other guests.

This matters because the hypervisor sits on the trust boundary. In cyber security, attackers may try to escape a VM and execute code on the host, especially when guest-to-host integration features are enabled. Defenders rely on strong isolation, timely patching, and careful control of shared folders, clipboard sync, USB passthrough, and other convenience features. In labs and developer environments, a desktop hypervisor is useful for testing risky software safely, but any flaw in the virtualization layer can turn a contained guest into a path to the host system.
