A deployment boundary is a technical distinction between ways a product or component can be installed and run. Different modes may use different code, services, permissions, or network paths, so a vulnerability may affect one deployment but not another.
In security assessments, identifying the boundary helps determine actual exposure rather than assuming every installation with the same product name is vulnerable. For example, a flaw in an application’s built-in office server may not affect a separately operated server. Defenders should inventory the specific component, check its version and runtime state, and verify how it is exposed before deciding on remediation. Installation mode can guide risk analysis, but it does not replace patching or checking system logs when a vulnerable deployment may have been reachable.
