Demonstrated performance is evidence of what a person can actually do in practice, rather than what they claim to know on paper. In cyber security, it is measured through hands-on tasks, simulations, code reviews, incident exercises, log analysis, or live operational work that shows whether someone can detect, contain, investigate, and recover from threats.
This matters because cyber teams operate under time pressure and incomplete information. A certificate may show study and baseline knowledge, but demonstrated performance shows judgment, speed, and accuracy in real conditions. Employers use it to assess defenders, analysts, and incident responders more reliably, and attackers indirectly expose it by forcing teams to prove their skills during phishing, intrusion, or ransomware events. Good performance-based assessments are specific, repeatable, and hard to game, so they better reflect readiness for real security work.
