A Defender exclusion is a Microsoft Defender setting that tells the antivirus engine to ignore specific files, folders, processes, or file types during scanning. Administrators sometimes use exclusions for trusted software that is heavily read or modified, but they reduce protection if they are too broad.
In cyber attacks, exclusions are valuable to intruders because they can hide malware from real-time detection and scheduled scans. If an attacker can add an exclusion, they may protect a spyware loader, persistence script, or staging folder from being flagged while it runs on the host. Defenders should treat new or unexpected exclusions as a high-priority alert, especially when they appear after a suspicious file launch or along with other persistence changes. Monitoring Defender configuration changes is an important defense because abuse of exclusions often signals an attempt to weaken built-in security rather than simply evade one scan.
