Defender automation

The use of automated tools to help security teams triage, validate, and respond faster.

Defender automation is the use of software-driven workflows to help security teams handle alerts, evidence, and routine response steps faster. It can triage suspicious events, enrich alerts with context, validate whether activity is likely malicious, and trigger low-risk containment actions such as ticket creation, account checks, or message quarantine.

This matters because modern attacks move quickly and create noise at scale. When a SOC relies only on manual review, attackers can use speed to overwhelm analysts and delay action. Automation helps defenders keep pace by reducing repetitive work and shortening decision time, while still leaving high-impact choices to people. In practice, it appears in SIEM and SOAR playbooks, phishing-reporting pipelines, identity monitoring, and endpoint response tools. Used well, it improves consistency and frees analysts to focus on deeper investigations; used poorly, it can amplify bad data, so validation and human oversight remain essential.
