Default access credentials

Factory-set usernames and passwords that remain a common attack surface if not changed.

Default access credentials are the factory-set usernames and passwords shipped on devices, appliances, and embedded systems. They are meant to help with first-time setup, but they become a serious weakness if they are never changed. In cyber security, these credentials are a common initial access point because attackers can often guess them, reuse published defaults, or automate login attempts across many exposed devices.

They matter especially in botnet and malware campaigns against internet-facing IoT gear. Attack tools may scan for common logins, try default pairs, or use modules that search for accounts still using factory values. Once a device is accessed, it can be enrolled into a botnet, used for scanning, or turned into a foothold for deeper compromise. Defenders reduce this risk by changing default passwords during deployment, disabling unused default accounts, enforcing unique credentials, and isolating devices that cannot be secured properly.
