Debug mode is a special operating state that relaxes normal protections so engineers can inspect system behavior, memory, and execution state. On secure hardware, it is intended for testing, troubleshooting, and failure analysis, not for production workloads.
In confidential computing, debug mode matters because it can weaken the isolation that keeps a VM private. If an attacker can force a protected workload into debug mode, memory that should stay encrypted or hidden may become readable. Defenders treat any path to debug activation as highly sensitive: it should be disabled in production, tightly controlled, and audited. In attacks against confidential VMs, coercing debug state is valuable because it can turn a privacy safeguard into a direct exposure point.
