DCF77

A German long-wave time signal broadcast at 77.5 kHz.

DCF77 is a German long-wave time signal broadcast at 77.5 kHz. Receivers use it to synchronize a local clock to an external reference, which is common in embedded systems, industrial devices, and radio clocks. Because the signal carries time information rather than a full network protocol, it is simple to consume and useful where low-power, low-cost timing is needed.

In cyber security, time is not just convenience: it affects log integrity, certificate validation, scheduled tasks, access controls, and forensic analysis. Any system that trusts DCF77 inherits the quality of the broadcast, so weak reception, interference, spoofing, or jamming can create drift or incorrect timestamps. Defenders reduce this risk by validating time from multiple sources, monitoring for sudden jumps, and using holdover behavior when the reference is unavailable. DCF77 is therefore a good example of external synchronization: efficient, but only trustworthy when the receiving system checks what it depends on.
