Datacentre optimization is a program for improving cloud or infrastructure efficiency by reducing waste, right-sizing resources, and tightening governance. In practice, it can include workload review, capacity planning, tagging, budget controls, policy enforcement, and better ownership tracking across servers, storage, and cloud subscriptions.
In cyber security, it matters because efficiency and control are linked. A well-optimized environment is easier to audit, cheaper to monitor, and less likely to contain forgotten assets, excessive permissions, or misconfigured services. Those gaps often become attack paths. Good optimization supports least privilege, logging, authentication, backup testing, and clear boundaries between environments. It also helps defenders detect configuration drift, where systems slowly move away from approved settings. The risk is that cost-cutting alone can weaken visibility, so optimization should improve both spend and security posture, not just lower bills.
