Data visibility

The ability to locate, identify, and monitor where data is stored and how it is used.

Data visibility is the ability to locate, identify, and monitor where data is stored and how it is used. In practice, it means knowing which files, databases, cloud buckets, SaaS apps, or endpoints contain sensitive information, who can access it, and whether that access matches policy.

This matters because security teams cannot protect data they cannot see. Poor visibility leads to oversharing, forgotten copies, and shadow data spread across cloud and internal systems. Attackers often benefit from this confusion by finding exposed records, while defenders use visibility tools to map data flows, classify sensitive content, and spot unusual access or movement. Strong data visibility supports access control, compliance, incident response, and least-privilege decisions. It is not a full defense on its own, but it is often the first step in reducing data exposure.
