Data theft campaign

An intrusion focused on stealing information rather than disrupting service.

A data theft campaign is an intrusion designed to quietly steal information instead of breaking systems or disrupting service. Attackers usually want sensitive files, email archives, account records, credentials, or proprietary documents, and they often try to avoid detection so they can keep collecting data over time.

This matters because stolen data can enable extortion, fraud, espionage, and follow-on attacks. In real incidents, attackers may target internet-facing business software, mail platforms, or file-sharing systems because those systems concentrate valuable information and often have direct access to internal data stores. Defenders look for unusual outbound connections, mass file access, new web shells, suspicious admin changes, and signs of data staging or compression. Strong patching, segmentation, least privilege, and monitoring of exfiltration paths are key defenses against this kind of operation.
