Data segregation

Separating sensitive records from general business systems to reduce blast radius.

Data segregation is the practice of separating sensitive records from everyday business systems, users, and backups. Instead of storing employee files, customer contracts, claims records, and operational content in one shared environment, organizations isolate them by system, access role, retention policy, or network zone. The goal is to reduce the blast radius if one account, server, or backup is compromised.

In cyber security, segregation matters because attackers often move laterally after the first intrusion. If sensitive data is tightly separated, a breach of a normal workspace or file share is less likely to expose regulated records or critical backups. Good segregation supports defense in depth through least privilege, separate backup repositories, encryption, and distinct administrative controls. Weak segregation can turn a single compromise into broad data theft, making ransomware, extortion, and recovery much harder to contain.
