A data path is the route information follows as it moves from storage, through processing or transport, and on to delivery. In practice, this may include files on disk, application code, network links, radios, APIs, and the final device or service that receives the data. The path matters because security depends not only on where data is stored, but also on every place it can be read, changed, delayed, or lost.
In cyber security, attackers often target the data path by intercepting traffic, inserting malicious data, or abusing weak handoff points between systems. Defenders study the same path to reduce exposure, add encryption and integrity checks, and remove unnecessary steps that create risk. A clear data path makes it easier to understand where trust is placed and where an attacker might try to break it.
