A data-leak vector is any route attackers can use to extract sensitive information from a system. It is not always a malware payload or a classic exploit; it can be a normal feature such as an API, search endpoint, portal page, export function, or admin workflow that is exposed, misconfigured, or abused with valid access.
In cyber security, identifying data-leak vectors matters because many breaches happen through ordinary business interfaces that look legitimate in logs. Attackers may query records, enumerate users, abuse search results, or automate requests to pull data quietly. Defenders reduce this risk by enforcing least privilege, hardening portal and API access, logging sensitive queries, setting rate limits, and monitoring for unusual data access patterns. The goal is to block not just intrusion, but the paths that turn routine application functions into theft channels.
