Data completeness

The degree to which required information is present and usable.

Data completeness is the degree to which required information is present, readable, and usable. In security and compliance work, completeness is different from accuracy: a record can be technically valid but still fail if key fields, logs, or metadata are missing. In regulated systems, incomplete data can break audit trails, weaken evidence, and prevent authorized users from making safe decisions.

In cyber security, completeness matters in incident response, detection engineering, and recovery. Missing authentication logs, partial backups, or incomplete asset inventories can hide an attack, delay containment, or make forensics unreliable. Defenders use validation checks, reconciliation jobs, and monitoring for gaps to confirm that critical records are fully populated. Attackers may exploit incomplete data by deleting records, disrupting synchronization, or corrupting source systems to create blind spots. For digital health and other high-trust environments, completeness is part of the security model because unavailable information can be as harmful as compromised information.
