Cyber-physical attack

A technique that links digital activity to a physical effect in the real world.

A cyber-physical attack is a technique that uses digital actions to trigger a measurable effect in the physical world. Instead of stealing data or disrupting software alone, the attacker influences systems that control electricity, machinery, sensors, or other infrastructure.

This matters because modern IT and operational technology are tightly connected. A workload, command, or traffic pattern can change power demand, cause timing shifts, or alter physical processes. In practice, cyber-physical attacks may use synchronized compute loads, manipulated control signals, or sensor interference to create instability, wear, or unsafe conditions. Defenders look for them by monitoring both network activity and physical telemetry, then adding safeguards such as rate limits, power caps, redundancy, and anomaly detection. In AI environments, large GPU jobs can become a cyber-physical concern when their power draw is controlled or synchronized enough to affect data-center power quality.
