Cyber espionage

covert intrusion aimed at collecting information rather than causing immediate destruction.

Cyber espionage is covert intrusion into networks, email systems, or cloud services to collect information rather than to destroy or disrupt immediately. Attackers may steal documents, monitor communications, map internal systems, or identify trusted partners and credentials they can reuse later. Unlike ransomware or sabotage, the goal is secrecy and persistence.

It matters because stolen data can reveal negotiations, intellectual property, logistics plans, access paths, and defensive weaknesses. In real campaigns, espionage often uses phishing, stolen passwords, malicious attachments, or abuse of remote access to blend in with normal activity. Defenders look for unusual logins, mailbox rules, privilege changes, and quiet data movement, then reduce risk with strong authentication, segmentation, least privilege, and monitoring of sensitive accounts and third-party connections.
