Cyber Asset Management

A security practice for discovering, classifying and tracking assets so defenders know what is present and how it is used.

Cyber Asset Management is the practice of discovering, classifying, and continuously tracking cyber-relevant assets such as servers, endpoints, PLCs, switches, virtual machines, and cloud resources. The goal is to maintain an authoritative view of what exists, where it is, who owns it, and how it is used.

It matters because attackers often look for forgotten, unmanaged, or misclassified assets: old systems left online, shadow devices added by third parties, or OT equipment that no one is actively monitoring. A strong asset program helps defenders reduce blind spots, map exposure, and prioritize patching or isolation based on business criticality. In industrial environments, it is often paired with passive monitoring so visibility can be gained without risky probing. That turns inventory into an operational defense control, not just a spreadsheet.
