CWE-269 is a weakness class for failures to assign or enforce privileges correctly. In practice, it appears when software gives a user, process, or service more authority than it should, or when authorization checks are missing, incomplete, or performed in the wrong place. This is especially dangerous in operating systems and services that run with elevated rights.
In cyber security, CWE-269 matters because privilege boundaries are the last line between a limited account and full system control. Attackers often look for bugs in trusted services, where a low-privilege input can trigger high-privilege behavior and lead to local privilege escalation, data tampering, or defense bypass. Defenders reduce the risk by applying least privilege, validating authorization at every sensitive action, isolating privileged code, and reviewing services that handle files, callbacks, or configuration on behalf of untrusted users.
