Current-state inventory

A live map of systems, services, and ownership as they exist now.

A current-state inventory is a live record of what an organization actually runs right now: devices, cloud accounts, applications, services, vendors, and the people or teams responsible for them. It is different from an architecture diagram or an old asset list, because it reflects the present reality, including temporary tools, shadow IT, and ownership changes.

In cyber security, this matters because you cannot protect or decommission what you cannot see. Attackers often exploit forgotten servers, orphaned accounts, unpatched SaaS tools, and exposed services that are missing from formal records. Defenders use a current-state inventory to prioritize patching, confirm offboarding, trace dependencies before making changes, and detect unauthorized additions. When paired with dependency mapping, it helps teams reduce outage risk and close blind spots that attackers use to hide.
