Current-state architecture

The live inventory of systems, sites, versions, and dependencies.

Current-state architecture is the live inventory of an organization’s systems, sites, software versions, identities, and dependencies as they actually exist today. It is different from target architecture or design diagrams because it reflects the operational environment, including legacy tools, temporary fixes, and undocumented connections.

In cyber security, this matters because defenders cannot protect, patch, segment, or recover what they cannot see. A current-state view helps teams identify exposed assets, unsupported versions, single points of failure, and hidden trust relationships that attackers can abuse for lateral movement or persistence. It is especially important during mergers, cloud migrations, and incident response, when ownership changes and systems may be integrated under pressure. Good current-state architecture supports faster triage, cleaner access control, and more realistic integration planning.
